Softball Recap: Whitehall Victorious

Whitehall took a 16-run loss the last time they faced off against Big Rapids, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Vikings had just enough and edged out the Cardinals 9-7. The win was some much needed relief for the Vikings as it spelled an end to their three-game losing streak.

Beth Leatrea was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, she struck out nine batters over seven innings while giving up six earned (and one unearned) runs off three hits. She has been consistent: she hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.

In other batting news, Kayden Johnson and Peyton Schultz did most of the damage at the plate: Johnson went 1-for-4 with three RBI, one run, and one double, while Schultz went 1-for-2 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI. That's the most RBI Johnson has posted since back in April. Jersie Peterson was another key player, going 1-for-3 with two runs, one stolen base, and one RBI.

Whitehall hit smart and finished the game with only one strikeout. The team has now struck out at least four batters in six consecutive matchups.

Whitehall's victory bumped their record up to 9-17. As for Big Rapids, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost seven of their last eight contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-11 record this season.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Whitehall beat Big Rapids by a score of 18-3 later that day.
