Softball Recap: Jena Takes Down Ranked Quitman

Jena faced Quitman in a battle between two of the state's top teams on Tuesday. Jena came out on top in a nail-biter against Quitman, sneaking past 6-5. That result was just more of the same for these two, as the Giants also won the last time the pair played back in March of 2024.

Kiette Cooper spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered four earned (and one unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in 17 consecutive appearances.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Haylee Dangerfield, who scored two runs and stole a base while getting on base in all four of her plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Sydney Williams, who went 1-for-3 with three RBI and one double.

The win made it two in a row for Jena and bumps their season record up to 17-4. The victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 10.5 runs over those games. As for Quitman, their loss ended a 16-game streak of wins at home dating back to last season and dropped them to 14-4.

Jena has already played their next game, a 10-0 win against West Monroe on the 29th. As for Quitman, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, an 11-0 victory against Hicks on the 28th.
