Softball Recap: Cumberland Clippers vs. Prout Crusaders
Cumberland had lost eight straight at home, but on Wednesday they dropped their record down to 2-15 to make it nine. They lost 15-9 to the Prout Crusaders. If the Clippers were looking for revenge after losing 5-0 to the Crusaders when the teams met back in May of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.
As for Prout, they are on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 12-6 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games.
For Prout's part, Lily Sheehan was a major factor no matter where she played. On the mound, she pitched seven innings while giving up four earned (and five unearned) runs off nine hits. Sheehan was also big at the plate, going a perfect 2-for-2 with three RBI, one run, and one double. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in March.
In other batting news, Emma Manzo was a standout: she went a perfect 5-for-5 with two runs and two RBI. Those five hits gave her a new career-high. Megan Gardiner also deserves some recognition as she hit her first double of the season.
We've got plenty of inter-league action coming up soon. Cumberland will take on rival Cranston West at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, Prout is set to face off against their familiar foe St. Mary Academy-Bay View at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.
