The Union Yellowjackets will face off against the Calhoun City Wildcats at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.
Calhoun City will challenge a team with plenty of momentum: Union extended their winning streak to five on Saturday. The Yellowjackets walked away with a 10-6 win over Walnut.
The team relied heavily on Tiara Campbell, who went 2-for-4 with two runs, one triple, and two RBI. The team also got some help courtesy of LaCee Bishop, who went 1-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.
Meanwhile, it can be hard to translate regular season success to the playoffs, but Calhoun City had no problem doing just that on Friday. They never let the Greenwaves get on the board and left with a 20-0 victory. The result was nothing new for the Wildcats, who have now won ten contests by 13 runs or more so far this season.
Madison Buckley was incredible, going 3-for-4 with one home run and four runs. That's the most runs she has posted over her last 13 matchups. Justiyah Pittman was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three runs and three RBI.
Calhoun City was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .522. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .345 or higher in six consecutive games.
Union's win was their fourth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 19-11. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.3 runs on average over those games. As for Calhoun City, they are on a roll lately: they've won seven of their last eight contests. That's provided a massive bump to their 16-9 record this season.
Thursday's matchup will be a test for both teams' pitchers. Union hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .324. However, it's not like Calhoun City struggles in that department as they've averaged .363. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Union was able to grind out a solid win over Calhoun City when the teams last played back in April of 2019, winning 6-2. Will the Yellowjackets repeat their success, or do the Wildcats have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
