Softball Recap: Gilbert Christian Takes a Loss

If Gilbert Christian was feeling good fresh off their 15-0 takedown of Highland Prep West last Tuesday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. Gilbert Christian lost 13-5 to the San Tan Foothills Sabercats on Friday. The Knights were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Sabercats apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in March of 2024.

Meredith Whitehurst spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered three earned (and ten unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up 11 Ks. Those 11 strikeouts set a new season-high mark for her.

On the hitting side, Claire DuCkworth was cooking despite her team's loss, scoring a run and stealing two bases while going 2-for-3. Those two hits gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Abigale Trask, who scored a run while going 1-for-3.

Gilbert Christian has been struggling recently as they've lost seven of their last eight matches. That's put a noticeable dent in their 2-9 record this season. San Tan Foothills' win ended a nine-game drought on the road dating back to last season and puts them at 2-9.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Gilbert Christian will venture away from home to square off against Valley Christian at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. Gilbert Christian's pitchers better be ready for this one: Valley Christian has averaged an impressive 9.1 runs per game this season. As for San Tan Foothills, they will head out to face off against Bourgade Catholic at 3:45 p.m. on Monday. Bourgade Catholic will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last.
