Preview: Meadville Eagles vs. Green City Gophers
After two games on the road, Meadville is heading back home. They will take on the Green City Gophers at 7:30 p.m. on Monday. Meadville has been dominant on offense recently, as they've racked up an incredible 318 points over their last five contests.
Last Friday, Meadville didn't have too much trouble with Bucklin-Macon County on the road as they won 56-40.
Gauge Shiflett was his usual excellent self, almost dropping a double-double on 25 points and nine rebounds. As a matter of fact, that's the most points he has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Reece Meyers, who scored 12 points along with six assists and two steals.
Meanwhile, Green City scored the most points they've had all season to find success on Tuesday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Linn County 99-23 on the road. Green City has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 11 games by 23 points or more this season.
Green City's success was the result of a balanced attack that saw several players step up, but Xander Salas led the charge by almost dropping a triple-double on 12 points, nine assists, and nine steals. Salas is on a roll when it comes to steals, as he's now grabbed two or more in the last four games he's played. Kaden Johnson was another key contributor, dropping a double-double on 13 points and ten rebounds.
Meadville is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six contests, which provided a massive bump to their 12-10 record this season. As for Green City, the victory was the eighth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 19-2.
Monday's contest is shaping up to be a masterclass in shooting: Meadville have been dynamite from deep this season, having made 37.5% of their threes per game. However, it's not like Green City struggles in that department as they've made 49.1% of their threes this season. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Meadville was taken down by Green City 80-37 in their previous meeting back in January of 2023. Thankfully for Meadville, Aaron Peavler (who scored 14 points along with five rebounds and two steals) won't be suiting up this time. Will that be enough to change the final result?
