Baseball Recap: Covington Takes a Loss

Covington extended their losing streak to three on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 9-7 in the process. They were a single run away from ending the streak, but they lost a 5-4 heartbreaker at the hands of the Seeger Patriots. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Patriots this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 3-0 on Monday.

Covington got a good showing from Carson Schaeffer, who pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off three hits. Schaeffer has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, Davyn Green made the most of his time at bat despite the final result and went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and two runs. He has become a key player for Covington: the team is 4-1 when he posts at least two runs, but 5-6 otherwise.

As for Seeger, their victory ended a three-game drought on the road and puts them at 8-8. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win they have posted since May 10, 2024.

On Seeger's side, Xavier Lang spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and two unearned) runs on eight hits.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Peyton Grimmett, who went 3-for-4 with three RBI, one stolen base, and one run. That's the most hits he has posted since back in May of 2024.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Covington will welcome Riverton Parke at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. As for Seeger, they will be playing at home against Parke Heritage at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday. The Patriots' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Wolves have averaged an impressive 6.5 runs per game this season.
