Basketball Recap: Saturday's Defeat Ends Northwest's Winning Streak

It was fun while it lasted, but Northwest's undefeated season came to an end after seven games on Saturday. They fell to the Derby Panthers 62-58. While losing is never fun, the Grizzlies can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Kansas basketball rankings (they are ranked 27th, while the Panthers are ranked third).

Northwest lost despite a true team effort on offense, the best among them being River Peters, who went 6 for 12 on his way to 17 points and seven rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Dj Brown, who went 7 of 16 on his way to 16 points and five rebounds.

Even though they lost, Northwest smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 11 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least ten offensive rebounds in three consecutive contests.

Jack Ulwelling went supernova for Derby, going 9 of 18 on his way to 27 points and six rebounds. The dominant performance gave Ulwelling a new career-high in rebounds. The team also got some help courtesy of Cayden Titus, who posted ten points and five rebounds.

Having lost for the first time this season, Northwest fell to 7-1. As for Derby, the win keeps them at an undefeated 7-0.

Northwest will face off against Heights at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. As for Derby, they will take on Haysville Campus at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Derby is facing Haysville Campus at the right time seeing as Haysville Campus is stuck on a five-game losing streak.
