While University didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-14), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past. Everything went their way against the Costa Mesa Mustangs on Monday as University made off with a 12-6 victory. The Trojans might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won six contests by six runs or more this season.
Carson Cruz was a major factor no matter where she played. She struck out 18 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and five unearned) runs off five hits. Those 18 strikeouts gave her a new career-high. She was also stellar in the batter's box, going 3-for-4 with five RBI and one run. She has been hot, having posted three or more hits the last six times she's played.
In other batting news, University let Jessica Hu and Sophia Weinberg run wild. Hu scored three runs and stole a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances, while Weinberg scored three runs while getting on base in four of her five plate appearances. The team also got some help courtesy of Maiko Shiraiwa, who scored two runs while going 3-for-4.
University kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 12 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least nine hits every time they've taken the field this season.
University's record now sits at 6-1. As for Costa Mesa, they are on a seven-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 1-10.
University didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, an 11-7 loss against Northwood on the 26th. As for Costa Mesa, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next match, a 16-7 defeat against Katella on the 31st.
