The Laguna Acoma Hawks will head out to face off against the Zuni Thunderbirds at 3:00 p.m. on Monday. Laguna Acoma is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 14.3 runs per game this season.
Laguna Acoma will bounce into Monday's match after beating Navajo Prep, who they had gone 2-7 against in their nine prior meetings. The Hawks' pitcher stepped up to hand the Eagles a 3-0 shutout on Tuesday.
Laguna Acoma's win was truly a team effort as five different players contributed at least one hit. One of them was Serenity Victorino, who scored a run while going 1-for-1. Another was Brianna Filmer, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with two doubles.
Laguna Acoma always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .750. That was just more of the same: they've now posted an OBP of .545 or higher in six consecutive contests.
Meanwhile, it was a Battle of the Birds when Zuni duked it out with Northwest on Saturday. The Thunderbirds blew past the Falcons 17-3. Considering the Thunderbirds have won four games by more than ten runs this season, Saturday's blowout was nothing new.
The team relied heavily on Kiayana Kallestewa, who fired off two home runs while going 2-for-3. The team also got some help courtesy of Kiaura Kallestewa, who scored two runs while going 2-for-3.
Laguna Acoma's record is now 6-3. As for Zuni, their victory ended a three-game drought at home and bumped them up to 4-7.
Monday's match might come down to which pitcher can control the ball better. Laguna Acoma has hit smart this season, having averaged an OBP of .668. However, it's not like Zuni struggles in that department as they've averaged .466. With both teams so capable at the plate, fans should be ready for an impressive hitting performance.
Laguna Acoma took their win against Zuni in their previous meeting back in April of 2024 by a conclusive 11-1 score. The rematch might be a little tougher for the Hawks since the squad won't have the home-field advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
