Basketball Game Preview: Classical Purple vs. Portsmouth Patriots

The Classical Purple will head out to take on the Portsmouth Patriots at 6:00 p.m. on Friday. Classical is coming into the matchup on a five-game losing streak.

Classical managed to keep up with St. Mary Academy-Bay View until halftime on Wednesday, but things quickly went downhill from there. Classical was dealt a 69-42 defeat at the hands of St. Mary Academy-Bay View.

Meanwhile, Portsmouth posted their biggest win since January 9, 2024 on Monday. They simply couldn't be stopped as they easily beat Juanita Sanchez Complex 56-27. The Patriots pushed the score to 48-24 by the end of the third, a deficit the Cavaliers had little chance of recovering from.

Portsmouth's win came from a few key players Classical will need to keep an eye on. One of the most notable was Annie Hurd, who posted 11 points along with six rebounds and three steals. She is trending in the right direction considering she's improved her point production for three straight games. Gyselle Mairs was another key player, putting up 13 points and three steals.

Portsmouth's record is now 8-5. As for Classical, their loss dropped their record down to 1-13.

Classical came up short against Portsmouth in their previous matchup back in January of 2024, falling 50-44. Can Classical avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
