Baseball Recap: Mount Union Takes Down Tri-Valley in a Playoff Battle

With a playoff win on the line, Mount Union rose to the challenge on Thursday. They narrowly escaped with a win as the team sidled past the Tri-Valley Bulldogs 4-3. The victory was familiar territory for the Trojans, who have now won four matchups in a row.

Cody McClain made a big impact while hitting and pitching. He tossed four innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in three consecutive appearances. He was also solid in the batter's box, getting on base in three of his five plate appearances with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

In other pitching news, Davin Yocum tossed a big game, tossing six innings while giving up just one earned (and one unearned) run off four hits. He has been consistent for a while: he hasn't given up more than two walks in 19 consecutive appearances.

Back at the plate, Mount Union let Jamon Ranck and Dylan Shawver run wild. Ranck went 1-for-4 with one stolen base, one run, and one double, while Shawver went 1-for-4 with two stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Those two stolen bases gave Shawver a new career-high. Maddox Hobbs was another key player, going 2-for-3 with one run and one double.

Mount Union's win was their fifth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 20-5. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.2 runs on average over those games. As for Tri-Valley, they moved to 20-7 with that loss, which also ended their three-game winning streak.

As of now, neither Mount Union nor the Bulldogs have any future games scheduled.
