Basketball Game Preview: Mountainair Mustangs vs. Corona/Vaughn Cardinals

Mountainair is 2-7 against Corona/Vaughn since January of 2019 but they'll have a chance to close the gap a little bit on Friday. The Mountainair Mustangs will square off against the Corona/Vaughn Cardinals at 6:00 p.m. Each of these teams will be fighting to keep a win streak alive as Mountainair comes in on five and Corona/Vaughn on 12.

Mountainair proved they can win big on Monday (they won by 41) and on Wednesday they proved they can win the close ones too. In a tight contest that could have gone either way, they made off with a 62-61 win over Alamo Navajo.

Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Corona/Vaughn). They claimed a resounding 76-28 victory over Hondo Valley. The Cardinals have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won 15 matchups by 23 points or more this season.

Mountainair better keep an eye on Harper Dunn. She was instrumental in Corona/Vaughn's win, dropping a double-double with 29 points and 27 rebounds. Dunn has been hot for a while, having posted eight or more boards the last 31 times she's played. Kassidy Lightfoot was another key player, dropping a double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds.

Corona/Vaughn pushed their record up to 20-3 with the win, which was their 15th straight at home dating back to last season. Those victories came thanks in part to their defensive effort, having only surrendered 21.9 points over those games. As for Mountainair, their victory bumped their record up to 10-18.

Mountainair was taken down by Corona/Vaughn 66-23 in their previous matchup on February 11th. A big factor in that loss was the dominant performance of Dunn, who dropped a double-double with 24 points and 16 boards.
