2A Western recap Oct. 16, 2012
Bayfield extended the longest winning streak in 2A Western this week by beating Gunnison, 58-14. The victory was the seventh in a row for the Wolverines.
Olathe and Pagosa Springs played the most hotly contested game in the league this week, with Olathe eventually emerging with a 20-14 victory.
Basalt's dynamic duo of Matt Williams and Jonny Medrano proved tough for Grand Valley to stop, as they were the top passer and receiver in the league this week. Williams threw for 123 yards and one touchdown and Medrano had 57 yards receiving. Andrade Josh helped Basalt's passing attack out by catching two balls for 37 yards.
Clay Crawford made the biggest impact on defense this week as Bayfield defeated the Cowboys. The 5-foot-6 junior forced one fumble.
Tanner Zimmerman was the most productive running back in the league this week. He ran for 310 yards on 32 carries as the Cardinals fell to the Cardinals. Teammate Bryan Hegwood added to the ground attack by rushing for 11 yards.
Thanks to the talents of Tyler Scott and Zimmerman Grand Valley has been able to do all sorts of things on offense. Scott leads the league in passing with 869 yards, while Zimmerman has rushed for 1074 yards this season. Basalt's Josh leads the league in receiving yards with 334 on 18 catches.
A big matchup in 2A Western this week will be when Aspen takes on the Cardinals. At the moment, the Skiers are in third, while Grand Valley is in second.
