Basketball Recap: Sayville Falls to Mount Sinai in First Game of Season

Sayville unfortunately couldn't capitalize on their home-court advantage in their season opener. They came up short against the Mount Sinai Mustangs on Friday, falling 74-54. The Golden Flashes haven't had much luck with the Mustangs recently, as the team's come up short the last seven times they've met.

Brian Vales was his usual excellent self, dropping a double-double on 22 points and 11 boards for Mount Sinai. That's the most points Vales has posted since back in December of 2023. Another player making a difference was Dominic Pennzello, who posted 17 points and seven rebounds.

The victory (which was Mount Sinai's seventh in a row) raised their record to 12-1.

Sayville will get a bit of extra time to process the defeat as their next game is a ways off. They'll take on Mount Sinai at 4:30 p.m. on January 28th. As for Mount Sinai, they won't have much time to rest: their next game is against William Floyd at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday. Mount Sinai knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past 13 matchups -- so hopefully William Floyd likes a good challenge.
