Softball Recap: Columbus East Gets the Win

The Columbus East Olympians sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 7-6 victory over the Southport Cardinals on Friday. That's two games straight that the Olympians have won by just one run.

Fish Baleigh made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two walks in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two runs, two RBI, and one double. That's the most runs she has posted since back in April.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Lola Watkins, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Mackenzie Hampton, who got on base in two of her four plate appearances with two runs and one RBI.

Columbus East is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches. That's provided a nice bump to their 9-15 record this season. As for Southport, they now have a losing record of 11-12.

Looking ahead, Columbus East will square off against Columbus North at 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The Olympians' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Bull Dogs have averaged an impressive 7 runs per game this season. As for Southport, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 17-3 win against Indianapolis Cardinal Ritter on the 24th.
