Baseball Recap: Fitzgerald Victorious

Fitzgerald's game on Monday was a loss, but they didn't let that memory haunt them on Wednesday. They walked away with a 10-5 victory over the Sterling Heights Stallions. This was payback for the Spartans, who suffered an 8-1 defeat the last time these two teams met.

Thomas Baranski spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and four unearned) runs on four hits and racked up 16 Ks. He has been consistent: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in five consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Leiland McCallep and Dylan Bush did most of the damage at the plate: McCallep got on base in all four of his plate appearances with three stolen bases, one triple, and two RBI, while Bush went 2-for-4 with three stolen bases, two runs, and two RBI. Those three stolen bases gave Bush a new career-high. David Nelson also deserves some recognition as he hit his first double of the season.

Fitzgerald now has a winning record of 7-6. As for Sterling Heights, they are on a 19-game losing streak (dating back to last season) that has dropped them down to 0-7.

Coming up, Fitzgerald will head out on the road to challenge New Haven at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. The Spartans' pitchers better be ready for this one: the Rockets have averaged an impressive 9.9 runs per game this season. As for Sterling Heights, they will be playing at home against Mott at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
