Baseball Recap: Marshall Comes Up Short

Friday just wasn't the day for Marshall's offense. They fell just short of the Arroyo Knights by a score of 2-0 on Friday. The Eagles were not able to repeat the success they had when they faced the Knights earlier this season, when they won 9-6.

Michael Gerst was a force to be reckoned with on the mound despite the final result: he struck out ten batters over 5.2 innings while giving up just two earned runs off three hits.

At the plate, Marshall saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Trevor Lain, who went 2-for-3 with one double.

Marshall has also traveled a rocky road recently, having lost three of their last four contests. That's put a noticeable dent in their 15-6-1 record this season. Even worse, they were so close so many times: the losses came by an average of only 1.67 runs. As for Arroyo, they are on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five matchups. That's provided a massive bump to their 12-9-1 record this season.

Marshall is taking a road trip to take on El Monte at 3:15 p.m. on Monday. The Eagles are facing the Lions at the right time seeing as the Lions are stuck on an 18-game losing streak. As for Arroyo, they will be playing at home against South El Monte at 3:30 p.m. on Monday. The Eagles' pitching crew has only allowed 2.3 runs per game this season, so the Knights' hitters will have their work cut out for them.
