Softball Game Preview: Mayfield Trojans vs. Centennial Hawks

Mayfield is 0-10 against Centennial since March of 2022 but things could change on Monday. The Trojans will welcome the Hawks at 7:00 p.m. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (Mayfield 1.6, Centennial 3.1) so any runs scored will be well earned.

Mayfield is coming in fresh off a high-stakes matchup with another one of New Mexico's top teams: Las Cruces, who was ranked eighth at the time (Mayfield was ranked third). The Trojans fell just short of the Bulldawgs by a score of 8-7 on Thursday. The loss was the Trojans' first of the season.

Meanwhile, Centennial strolled into their game on Thursday with a perfect record and they left with the same. They put the hurt on Alamogordo with a sharp 15-8 victory. The result was nothing new for the Hawks, who have now won 11 games by six runs or more so far this season.

Destiny Perez spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered six earned (and two unearned) runs on eight hits and racked up eight Ks. She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Kendra Martinez was a standout: she went a perfect 4-for-4 with one home run, four runs, and three RBI. Those four hits gave her a new career-high. The team also got some help courtesy of Amanda Valles, who got on base in four of her five plate appearances with one home run, three runs, and three RBI.

Centennial pushed their record up to 13-0 with the win, which was their 11th straight on the road dating back to last season. Those road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games. As for Mayfield, their loss was their first of the season and makes their record 12-1.
