Basketball Recap: Vina Red Devils vs. Berry Wildcats
The Vina Red Devils came into Wednesday's game having lost six straight, but that streak is now in the rearview. They enjoyed a cozy 53-38 victory over Berry on Wednesday. That result was just more of the same for these two, as Vina also won the last time the pair played back in November of 2023.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Vina to victory, but perhaps none more so than Layla Hester, who scored 20 points along with five assists and four steals. Hester has been hot recently, having posted two or more steals the last eight times she's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Kaley Attaway, who scored eight points along with ten rebounds and three steals.
Despite the loss, Berry still got an impressive performance from Maggie Mauldin, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 15 rebounds. Shayla Mayfield was another key contributor, scoring three points along with 14 rebounds and two steals.
Vina's win ended a seven-game drought on the road and puts them at 10-17. As for Berry, they have not been sharp recently as the team's lost four of their last five matchups, which lines up perfectly with their 4-16 record this season.
Vina will head out on the road to challenge the Tigers at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday. As for Berry, they will look to defend their home court on Thursday against the Bulldogs at 5:00 p.m. Lamar County is no doubt hoping to put an end to a three-game streak of away losses.
