Basketball Recap: Cotopaxi Takes a Loss

Cotopaxi entered their contest against Lake County on Saturday without any home losses, but there's a first time for everything. The Cotopaxi Pirates were just a bucket shy of victory and fell 46-45 to the Lake County Panthers. The result was an unpleasant reminder to the Pirates of the 64-62 loss they experienced in the pair's previous head-to-head fixture back in December of 2023.

Despite the loss, Cotopaxi still got an impressive performance from Terrance Evans, who dropped a double-double with 16 points and 12 boards. Evans is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down nine or more in each of the last three games he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Joel Tezak, who en route to 10 points and three steals.

Lake County had a senior duo take command as Jaxon Wood dropped a double-double with 12 points and 13 boards and Isaiah Martinez posted 18 points. That makes it four consecutive games in which Martinez has scored at least a third of Lake County's points. Another player making a difference was Canaan Hall, who scored five points.

Cotopaxi suffered their first home defeat, dropping their record down to 15-4. As for Lake County, they have been performing well recently as they've won five of their last six matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-12 record this season.

Cotopaxi will challenge Cripple Creek-Victor at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday. As for Lake County, they wasted no time getting back out on the court and have already played their next game, a 62-61 victory against Arrupe Jesuit on the 24th.
