Basketball Game Preview: Surry HomeSchool Runnin' Patriots vs. South Wake Sabres

The Surry HomeSchool Runnin' Patriots will take on the South Wake Sabres at 3:45 p.m. on Friday.

It's never fun to lose, and it's even less fun to lose 58-28, which was the final score in Surry HomeSchool's tilt against South Guilford HomeSchool on Saturday. The Runnin' Patriots have struggled against the Cougars recently, as the game was their eighth consecutive lost matchup.

Meanwhile, South Wake came tearing into Saturday's contest with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 44 points), and they left with even more momentum. They claimed a resounding 70-37 win over the Thunder. Given the Sabres' advantage in MaxPreps' North Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 32nd, while the Thunder are ranked 168th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Surry HomeSchool better keep an eye on Rebekah Hartzell. She was instrumental in South Wake's win, en route to 30 points along with six boards and six steals. Hartzell has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last seven times she's played. Savannah Taylor was another key player, putting up nine points and five rebounds.

South Wake smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least nine offensive boards in five consecutive matches.

South Wake's record now sits at 27-2. As for Surry HomeSchool, their defeat dropped their record down to 7-17.

Surry HomeSchool was dealt a bruising 59-4 loss at the hands of South Wake in their previous matchup back in February of 2024. Can Surry HomeSchool avenge their defeat or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
