Football Recap: Calallen's Punishing Run Game Keeps Rolling

After having lost a blowout in their previous game against Sinton, Calallen was happy to have turned things around on Friday. Their defense stepped up to hand the Valley View Tigers a 77-0 shutout. That looming 77-0 mark stands out as the most commanding margin for the Wildcats yet this season.

Calallen's win was a true team effort, with many players turning in solid performances. Perhaps the best among them was Connor Klostermann, who rushed for 73 yards and one touchdown on only five carries, and also threw for 104 yards and a pair of TDs on perfect 5-for-5 passing. The dominant performance also gave Klostermann a new career-high in passer rating (177.1). Another back making a difference was Ricardo Rodrguez, who rushed for 59 yards and three scores on only six carries.

They were just one part of a punishing run game: Calallen was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 358 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 174 rushing yards in 14 consecutive games dating back to last season.

Calallen didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Chris Durham and Jagger Batek.

Calallen's victory bumped their record up to 5-2. As for Valley View, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 1-6.

Coincidentally, Calallen and Valley View will both be playing Tuloso-Midway the next time they take the field. The Wildcats will host the Warriors & Cherokees at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, while the Tigers will head out to face them at 7:00 p.m. on the 24th.
