League recap: First place up for grabs as Fowler and Caruthers jockey for top spot

West Sequoia league recap: 5/21/12

Caruthers trails Fowler by just two games in the league standings, which means there could be a new first-place team by next week.

The Redcats (21-9, 8-0) are red-hot, having won five straight games, the longest such streak in West Sequoia. In the past week, Fowler won another two games, including a 13-0 win over Golden Valley.

The Blue Raiders boasted the best pitching over the past week, holding opponents to the league's fewest hits and issuing the fewest walks. On the season, Caruthers has allowed just 55 hits, while striking out 81 batters. Dallin Cornelious leads Caruthers with 28 strikeouts in 22 innings pitched.

The Blue Raiders finished with the most hits in the league this week, adding 69 for a league-leading total of 212. Caruthers, which sits in second place, is led by Brandon Gomez, who has accumulated 29 hits this season.



The week's strikeout crown belonged to Ryan Neufeld, who turned in five Ks for Fresno Christian. He's second in the league with 28 total strikeouts.

The Blue Raiders' Gomez finished his week with 11 hits, tops in the league. His 29 hits for the year are second in the league, and he boasts a .475 batting average.
