Basketball Recap: Norfolk Collegiate Falls Despite Big Games from Josh Mills and Savion Samlal

Norfolk Collegiate was not able to break out of their rough patch on Friday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They fell 80-70 to the Veritas Collegiate Academy Spartans. Despite running the score up even higher than they did in their prior game last Thursday (56), the Mighty Oaks still had to take the loss.

Norfolk Collegiate's loss came despite strong showings from Savion Samlal and Josh Mills. Samlal went 9 for 17 en route to 27 points in addition to seven boards and three steals, while Mills went 10 of 19 on his way to 27 points. Those 27 points gave Samlal a new career-high.

It was another big night for Marcqell Freeman, who went 11 of 18 en route to 32 points along with seven assists and seven rebounds for Veritas Collegiate Academy. Freeman's evening made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least ten points. Another player making a difference was Talon Wray, who went 6 for 11 on his way to 16 points.

Norfolk Collegiate's loss dropped their record down to 8-4. As for Veritas Collegiate Academy, they have been performing well recently as they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 11-5 record this season.

Norfolk Collegiate wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next contest, a 53-33 win against Hampton Roads Academy on the 21st. As for Veritas Collegiate Academy, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, a 73-71 defeat against Dinwiddie on the 20th.
