Basketball Recap: Cardinal Newman Skates Past Varsity Opponent with Ease

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Cardinal Newman). They blew past Varsity Opponent 76-48 on Monday. The Cardinals have seen this before: they got the W the last time they saw Varsity Opponent, too.

Cardinal Newman was led to victory by Nigel Chivers and Elton Smith Jr.. Chivers went 11 for 19 on his way to 26 points in addition to seven steals and five boards, while Smith Jr. dropped a double-double on 22 points and ten rebounds. With that strong performance, Chivers is now averaging an impressive 2.8 steals per game. The team also got some help courtesy of Desmond Harrington, who posted eight points along with five rebounds and three steals.

Cardinal Newman is on a roll lately: they've won three of their last four matches, which provided a nice bump to their 4-3 record this season.

Cardinal Newman will face off against Combine Academy National at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Combine Academy National knows how to get points on the board -- the squad has finished with 55 points or more in their past six games -- so hopefully Cardinal Newman likes a good challenge. As for Varsity Opponent, they didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next contest, a 75-40 defeat against Twin Valley on the 9th.
