Basketball Recap: Verdugo Hills Comes Up Short

If Verdugo Hills was feeling good fresh off their 81-56 takedown of North Hollywood last Friday, their most recent game may have dampened their spirits a bit. The Verdugo Hills Dons took a 55-49 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Arleta Mustangs. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Mustangs this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 78-63 two weeks ago.

When it comes to explaining why Verdugo Hills lost on Wednesday, don't look at William Gharabekyan. Despite the final result, he dropped a double-double with 19 points and 18 rebounds. Gharabekyan's afternoon made it three games in a row in which he has scored at least 19 points. Jeffrey Moran was another key player, putting up 11 points along with five boards and three steals.

Even though they lost, Verdugo Hills smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 16 offensive boards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least 11 offensive rebounds in ten consecutive games.

Verdugo Hills now has a losing record of 13-14. As for Arleta, the victory (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 17-7.

Looking ahead, Verdugo Hills will welcome Poly at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. As for Arleta, they will head out to challenge Sherman Oaks CES at 4:00 p.m. on Friday.
