Baseball Game Preview: Westran Hornets vs. Eugene Eagles

The Westran Hornets are taking a road trip to take on the Eugene Eagles at 5:00 p.m. on Monday. The two teams each escaped (but just barely!) with wins against their previous opponents.

Westran took a seven-run loss the last time they faced off against Salisbury, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. The Hornets sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 5-4 win over the Panthers on Wednesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Hornets.

Meanwhile, Eugene came tearing into Wednesday's matchup with eight straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.6 runs), and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top in a nail-biter against the Bulldogs, sneaking past 5-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest victory the Eagles have posted since May 2nd.

Drew Hart made a splash no matter where he played. He didn't allow a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out ten over six innings pitched. That's the most strikeouts he has posted since back in April. He was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one run and one double.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Sam Schulte, who went 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBI. Garet Wood was another key player, going 1-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one double.

Eugene was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .375. That was just more of the same: they've now posted a batting average of .375 or higher in three consecutive contests.

Eugene's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 23-8. Those home victories came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.8 runs over those games. As for Westran, their record now sits at 17-7.
