Football Recap: Pagosa Springs Takes a Loss

Pagosa Springs had lost five straight on the road dating back to last season, but on Friday they dropped down to 1-3 to make it six. They were outmatched by the Elizabeth Cardinals and fell 41-0. The Pirates were given a dose of their own medicine in this game as the Cardinals apparently hadn't forgotten their defeat the last time these teams played back in September of 2024.

Despite the loss, Pagosa Springs still got an impressive performance from Colton Lucero, who rushed for 163 yards while picking up 7.8 yards per carry.

As for Elizabeth, the win made it two in a row for them and bumps their season record up to 4-1. The game marked their most dominant victory of the season.

Griffin Widhalm had an outrageously good game as he rushed for 112 yards and two TDs on only five carries, and also threw for 120 yards and one touchdown on only six passes. The dominant performance also gave him a new career-high in passer rating (149.3). Andrew Martinez was another key player, gaining 109 total yards and a touchdown.

Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Pagosa Springs will host Salida at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The Pirates will be up against the Spartans' rather soft defense (which has allowed 42 points per contest), so fans could be in store for a big offensive performance. As for Elizabeth, they will be playing in front of their home fans against Strasburg at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. The two teams have allowed few points on average (the Cardinals 12, the Indians 9.2) so any points scored will be well earned.
