West Washington and Scottsburg are an even 3-3 against one another since May of 2015, but likely not for long. The Senators will head out on the road to square off against the Warriors at 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (West Washington has five straight victories, Scottsburg has 17 straight defeats), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
West Washington came out on top against Henryville on Monday thanks in part to the team's impressive five-run fifth inning. The Senators won by a run and slipped past the Hornets 10-9. For those keeping track at home, that's the closest win the Senators have posted since May 6th.
The team relied heavily on Meredith Deaton, who went 3-for-4 with three runs, three RBI, and one triple. That's the most RBI she has posted since back in May of 2024. Layla Manship was another key player, going 1-for-3 with three RBI.
They weren't the only ones making solid contact: West Washington kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 14 hits. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now got at least 13 hits in five consecutive matchups.
Eastern hit Scottsburg with a eight-run first inning on Monday, which goes a long way in explaining the final result. The Warriors came up short against the Musketeers, falling 12-2. Warriors fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Musketeers since on Monday.
Scottsburg saw four different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Hannah Tatlock, who went 1-for-2 with one run and one double. Lauren Chapa also deserves some recognition as she brought in her first RBI of the season.
West Washington pushed their record up to 17-4 with the victory, which was their fifth straight on the road. Those road wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Scottsburg, their loss dropped their record down to 0-15.
Scottsburg's pitching crew has a crucial task ahead of them: West Washington hasn't had any issues making contact this season, having earned a batting average of .362. It's a different story for Scottsburg, though, as they've only averaged .239. Will they be able to contain West Washington's hitters?
West Washington was able to grind out a solid victory over Scottsburg when the teams last played back in May of 2023, winning 6-3. Will the Senators repeat their success, or do the Warriors have a new game plan this time around? We'll find out soon enough.
