Softball Recap: Southern Wayne Takes a Loss

Southern Wayne extended their losing streak to seven on Tuesday, dropping their season record down to 2-20 in the process. They came up short against the West Johnston Wildcats, falling 17-0. Having soared to a lofty ten runs in the game before, the Saints' shutout was a dramatic turnaround.

As for West Johnston, they are on a roll lately: they've won nine of their last ten contests. That's provided a nice bump to their 13-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.0 runs on average over those games.

For West Johnston's part, Faith Chapman made a big impact no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, pitching two innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. Chapman has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't given up more than one walk in 13 consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, going 1-for-3 with two stolen bases, three RBI, and one run. Those two stolen bases gave her a new career-high.

In other batting news, Laney Pearce was a standout: she went a perfect 3-for-3 with one home run, two stolen bases, and three runs. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March. Another player making a difference was Reagan Sutton, who got on base in all four of her plate appearances with three stolen bases, two runs, and one RBI.

We've got plenty of inter-conference action coming up soon. Southern Wayne is set to face off against their familiar foe C.B. Aycock at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Meanwhile, West Johnston will challenge rival South Johnston at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. The two teams have allowed few runs on average (the Wildcats 2.9, the Trojans 2.2) so any runs scored will be well earned.
