Football Recap: Capital Prep/Achievement First's Rushing Attack Does It Again

It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact Capital Prep/Achievement First can now relate to. They fell 41-28 to the Waterbury Career Academy Spartans on Tuesday. The defensive woes were uncharacteristic for the Trailblazers, who until this match were averaging 14.55 points allowed.

Despite the loss, Capital Prep/Achievement First still got an impressive performance from Hashim Jones, who rushed for 179 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 7.5 yards per carry. Jones' rushing production has been exceptional for a while as that marked his 17th straight game with at least 119 rushing yards dating back to last season.

Jones was just one part of a punishing run game: Capital Prep/Achievement First was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 340 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 168 rushing yards in 17 consecutive contests dating back to last season.

Capital Prep/Achievement First didn't go easy on the quarterback and picked off two passes before the game was over. The picks came courtesy of Oshoy Fray and Malique Marshall.

Leading Waterbury Career Academy to victory were Mekheem Ambursley and Dylan Rossi. Ambursley rushed for 235 yards and one touchdown while picking up 13.8 yards per carry, while Rossi rushed for 102 yards and four touchdowns on only 11 carries. Those 102 rushing yards gave Rossi a new career-high.

Capital Prep/Achievement First's loss ended a three-game streak of wins at home and dropped them to 10-1. As for Waterbury Career Academy, the win was the fifth in a row for them, bringing their record for this year to 8-3.

Capital Prep/Achievement First will have a little extra prep time after the defeat as they won't be playing again for a while. They'll take on Ansonia at 7:00 p.m. on December 17th. As for Waterbury Career Academy, they didn't take long to hit the field again: they've already played their next game, a 28-23 loss against Bloomfield on the 8th.
