Softball Recap: Donna Takes a Loss

Donna extended their losing streak to four on Friday, dropping them down to 10-18-1. They came up short against the Harlingen South Hawks, falling 17-1. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Hawks this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 19-1 back in March.

Celeste Oviedo was cooking despite her team's loss, going 1-for-2 with one home run. That home run marked the first that she has launched this season.

As for Harlingen South, the win was the fourth in a row for them, bringing their record up to 12-14. They might be getting used to big wins seeing as the team has won 11 games by nine runs or more this season.

On Harlingen South's side, Angela Perez looked comfortable as she pitched two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Perez has been consistent: she hasn't given up more than two walks in seven consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Harlingen South let Jaylin Mata and Lauren Gonzalez run wild. Mata went 1-for-3 with one home run, three RBI, and two runs, while Gonzalez went a perfect 2-for-2 with two stolen bases, three runs, and two RBI. That's the most stolen bases Gonzalez has posted since back in March of 2025. The team also got some help courtesy of Sunnie Wheeler, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with two runs, one triple, and one stolen base.

Coming up, Donna will face off against Edcouch-Elsa at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Yellowjackets will aim to continue their three-game streak of scoring more runs each contest than the last. As for Harlingen South, they will square off against Porter at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday. The Cowboys have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 11.41 runs per game on average), something the Hawks will no doubt try to take advantage of.
