IRVINE, Calif. - Irvine (Calif.) saw its 11-point lead dwindle to three, but still managed to hang on and defeat Northwood (Irvine, Calif.) 21-18 on Saturday.

The Vaqueros were up 14-7 at the half after taking the lead on a touchdown pass by Ryan Goodman to Christian Mccrossan in the first quarter.

Irvine saw its 7-point halftime lead fall to four entering the fourth.

IHS's most effective player was Goodman. The junior quarterback threw two touchdowns.

Kevin Norman played well for the Timberwolves. The senior quarterback threw one touchdown. His performance brought his touchdown total to eight on the year.

The Vaqueros also won the meeting between the two teams last season, 29-28.

The victory was a step in the right direction for Irvine, which was coming off a 41-0 defeat at the hands of Corona del Mar in its previous game. The defeat comes as a step back for Northwood, which notched a 31-16 victory over Beckman in its previous outing.

Irvine (5-4) will play a Pacific Coast game against Woodbridge next week, while Northwood (3-6) will take on University also in a Pacific Coast game.
