Football Recap: Mt. Whitney Pioneers vs. Justin Garza Guardians
Mt. Whitney extended their losing streak (dating back to last season) to seven on Thursday, dropping them down to 0-2. They were dealt a 53-18 loss at the hands of the Justin Garza Guardians. The Pioneers were in a tough position after the first half, with the score already sitting at 32-6.
Mt. Whitney lost despite a true team effort on offense. The best among them was Jarell Oakes, who picked up 87 receiving yards and one score. The team also got some help courtesy of Levi Young, who threw for 165 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
As for Justin Garza, they have started the season off flawlessly and has a 2-0 record to show for it. They not only won on Thursday, but they posted their biggest win since September 19, 2024 (when they won 47-7).
Leading Justin Garza to victory were Samir Mohammed and Bohden Smith. Mohammed rushed for 85 yards and three TDs on only 12 carries, while Smith threw for 152 yards and one touchdown while completing 80% of his passes. The dominant performance also gave Smith a new career-high in passer rating (154.2).
Looking ahead, Mt. Whitney will be playing in front of their home fans against Tulare Western at 7:30 p.m. on the 5th. As for Justin Garza, they will head out on the road to square off against Kerman at 7:30 p.m. on the 5th.
