Baseball Recap: Smithfield-Selma Takes a Loss

Smithfield-Selma extended their losing streak to four on Wednesday, dropping them down to 5-9. They lost 17-0 to the Cleveland Rams. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Rams this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 15-0 on Tuesday.

Smithfield-Selma saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Connor Scherbekow, who went a perfect 1-for-1 with one double. That hit marked the first that Scherbekow has got this season.

As for Cleveland, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven matchups. That's provided a nice bump to their 7-5 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.4 runs on average over those games.

On Cleveland's side, Cam Dean was a major factor while hitting and pitching. On the mound, he tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs off one hit. Dean was even better at the plate, getting on base in all four of his plate appearances with one home run, four runs, and two RBI. Those four runs gave him a new career-high.

In other pitching news, Jake Massengill looked comfortable as he tossed two innings while giving up no earned runs off one hit. He has been nothing but reliable on the mound: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.

Looking ahead, Smithfield-Selma will take on Greenfield in a tournament on Saturday. As for Cleveland, they will square off against Midway at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday.
