Baseball Recap: Turner Comes Up Short

Turner had lost eight straight on the road, but on Thursday they dropped their record down to 4-18 to make it nine. They took a 5-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Piper Pirates. Unfortunately, that's the second time they've come up short against the Pirates this season, as they also lost their prior matchup 8-6 on Tuesday.

As for Piper, the win (which was their fourth in a row) raised their record to 13-9. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.0 runs on average over those games.

For Piper's part, Jack Bakarich spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered only one earned (and one unearned) run on three hits. Bakarich has been consistent: he hasn't given up more than one earned run in five consecutive appearances.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Mason Porter, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four stolen bases, one run, and one RBI. Those four stolen bases gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Jovahni Perez, who earned one RBI, two runs, and three stolen bases.

Both squads will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Turner will head out to challenge Leavenworth at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The Golden Bears' pitchers better be ready for this one: the PIONEERS have averaged an impressive 8.4 runs per game this season. As for Piper, they are taking a road trip to face off against West at 4:00 p.m. on Monday.
