Softball Game Preview: Cecilia Bulldogs vs. Opelousas Catholic Vikings

Cecilia hasn't had much luck against Opelousas Catholic recently, but that could start to change on Monday. The Bulldogs are taking a road trip to take on the Vikings at 4:00 p.m. Keep an eye on the score for this one: the two teams posted some lofty run totals in their previous games.

Cecilia managed to slip by Teurlings Catholic the last time these teams faced off, but didn't have those same answers this time around. The Bulldogs lost 17-10 to the Rebels on Thursday. The Bulldogs have now taken an 'L' in back-to-back games.

Meanwhile, Opelousas Catholic entered their tilt with Breaux Bridge on Thursday with two consecutive wins, and they'll enter their next game with three. They blew past the Tigers 19-8. The result was nothing new for the Vikings, who have now won 13 contests by six runs or more so far this season.

Ashley Little was a major factor while hitting and pitching. She tossed 2.1 innings while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in five consecutive appearances. She was also stellar in the batter's box, firing off two home runs, four runs, and four RBI while getting on base in five of her six plate appearances. That's the most runs she has posted since back in March.

In other batting news, the team relied heavily on Madison Gussman, who scored five runs and stole three bases while getting on base in five of her six plate appearances. Those three stolen bases gave her a new career-high. Grace Luna was another key player, scoring three runs and stealing a base while going 3-for-4.

Opelousas Catholic kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 16 hits. That's the most hits they've managed all season.

Opelousas Catholic pushed their record up to 16-10 with the win, which was their sixth straight at home. Those home victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.7 runs on average over those games. As for Cecilia, their loss dropped their record down to 6-19.

Cecilia might still be hurting after the 18-0 defeat they got from Opelousas Catholic when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Can the Bulldogs avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
