Preview: Calvary Baptist Academy Patriots vs. Bloomingdale Blazers
The Calvary Baptist Academy Patriots will be playing in front of their home fans against the Bloomingdale Blazers at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Hopefully Calvary Baptist Academy focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 15 two weeks ago.
Calvary Baptist Academy managed to keep up with West Logan Christian Academy until halftime, but things quickly went downhill from there. Calvary Baptist Academy had to suffer through a rough 65-35 loss at the hands of West Logan Christian Academy. Calvary Baptist Academy's loss continues an unfortunate trend for the team, making it three in a row.
Despite their defeat, Calvary Baptist Academy saw several players rise to the challenge and make noteworthy plays. Jacob Vaughn, who scored 11 points along with nine rebounds and two steals, was perhaps the best of all. Vaughn also posted two blocks for the first time this season. The team also got some help courtesy of James DeGroff, who scored eight points along with six rebounds and three blocks.
Meanwhile, Bloomingdale was able to grind out a solid win over Rose Hill Christian on Thursday, taking the game 50-42. Given Bloomingdale's advantage in MaxPreps's basketball rankings in their respective home states (they are ranked 84th in West Virginia, while Rose Hill Christian is ranked 275th in Kentucky), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Bloomingdale relied on the efforts of Sutton Roten, who dropped a double-double on 19 points and 20 rebounds, and Marc Brown, who scored 13 points along with seven assists. Roten is on a roll when it comes to rebounds, as he's now pulled down eight or more in the last five games he's played. Another player making a difference was Solomon Backus, who scored four points along with five steals and two blocks.
Calvary Baptist Academy's loss dropped their record down to 6-9. As for Bloomingdale, their victory bumped their record up to 9-6.
Tuesday's match is shaping up to be a scrappy game: Calvary Baptist Academy have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 30.2 rebounds per game. However, it's not like Bloomingdale struggles in that department as they've been averaging only 31.5 rebounds per game. Given Calvary Baptist Academy's sizeable advantage in that area, Bloomingdale will need to find a way to close that gap.
Calvary Baptist Academy didn't have too much breathing room in their game against Bloomingdale in their previous matchup back in December of 2023, but they still walked away with a 51-45 victory. One of the biggest obstacles the team faced in that game was Roten, who scored 17 points along with six rebounds and three steals. Now that he's got a second chance to win this matchup, will Calvary Baptist Academy still be able to contain him? There's only one way to find out.
