Softball Recap: Six Straight Home Wins for Hueytown

Hueytown hadn't done well against Sumiton Christian recently (they were 1-7-1 in their previous nine matchups), but they didn't let the past get in their way on Monday. The Hueytown Golden Gophers came out on top against the Sumiton Christian Eagles by a score of 9-6. While the Golden Gophers didn't have the best season last year (they finished 7-20), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Bryanna Kemp was a major factor no matter where she played. She looked comfortable on the mound, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out 13 over 6.1 innings pitched. Kemp was also big at the plate, scoring a run while going 2-for-3.

In other batting news, Jenna Melton was incredible, going 2-for-4 with one home run, four RBI, and two runs. She has been hot recently, having posted at least one home run the last three times she's played. Another player making a difference was Leah Cottingham, who went 1-for-3 with one home run.

Hueytown's win was their sixth straight at home, which pushed their record up to 7-4. The wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 4.0 runs on average over those games. As for Sumiton Christian, their defeat dropped their record down to 2-2.

Coming up, Hueytown will square off against Oak Grove at 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Oak Grove has struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 12.33 runs per game on average), something Hueytown will no doubt try to take advantage of. We've got a battle between Eagles coming up. Oak Mountain's pitching crew has only allowed 2.6 runs per game this season, so Sumiton Christian's hitters will have their work cut out for them.
