Baseball Recap: West Campus Continues Road Dominance on Thursday

The matchup between West Campus and Foothill on Thursday hardly resembled the 0-0 effort from their previous meeting. The Warriors put the hurt on the Mustangs with a sharp 17-7 victory. Considering the Warriors have won ten matchups by more than seven runs this season, Thursday's blowout was nothing new.

Jarrett Arias made a big impact no matter where he played. He struck out seven batters over four innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off five hits. He has been consistent : he hasn't tossed less than five strikeouts in seven consecutive appearances. He was also stellar in the batter's box, going 1-for-2 with one home run and two RBI.

In other batting news, Emmett Scharn was a standout: he scored three runs while going 4-for-4. Those four hits gave him a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Xavier Mendoza, who went 3-for-4 with five RBI and two runs.

West Campus kept the outfield on their toes and finished the game with 17 hits. That's a new trend for them: they were averaging 5.5 hits per game earlier this season, but in their last 15 contests they've averaged 12.

West Campus' win was their eighth straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 12-5. The road victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 2.6 runs on average over those games. As for Foothill, they have traveled a rocky road recently, having lost eight of their last nine games. That's put a noticeable dent in their 3-13 record this season.

West Campus and Foothill could both be facing uphill battles in their next games considering their disadvantage in the MaxPreps California Rankings. The Warriors will face off against Fairfield at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday with a big rank disadvantage (884 vs. 387). Meanwhile, Foothill (ranked 1122nd) will meet Wheatland (ranked 225th) at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
