Softball Recap: Fountain Valley Sets Scoring Season-High Against Newport Harbor

Winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Fountain Valley). Everything went their way against the Newport Harbor Sailors on Tuesday as they made off with a 14-3 win. The team's explosion at the plate also rewarded the Barons with their most commanding win of the season.

Courtney Kols looked comfortable as she tossed three innings while giving up no earned runs off two hits. She has been consistent : she hasn't given up more than one walk any time she's pitched this season.

On the hitting side, the team relied heavily on Andrea Maldonado, who scored five runs while going 3-for-4. Those five runs gave her a new career-high. Another player making a difference was Ella Kim, who went a perfect 2-for-2 with four RBI and two doubles.

Fountain Valley always had someone on base and finished the game having posted an OBP of .585. That's the best OBP they've posted all season.

Fountain Valley is on a roll lately: they've won four of their last five games. That's provided a nice bump to their 10-7 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.6 runs on average over those games. As for Newport Harbor, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-10.

Coming up, Fountain Valley will head out to challenge Edison at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday. The Chargers have struggled to contain batters this season (they've allowed 6.56 runs per game on average), something the Barons will no doubt try to take advantage of. As for Newport Harbor, they will square off against Tustin at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
