Basketball Recap: Wekiva Beats Vanguard for Their Fourth Straight Win

Wekiva had already won three in a row (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 7.7 points) and they went ahead and made it four on Saturday. They strolled past the Vanguard Panthers with points to spare, taking the game 60-46. Given the Mustangs' advantage in MaxPreps' Florida basketball rankings (they are ranked 245th, while the Panthers are ranked 498th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.

Wekiva found their leader in sophomore Eric Nichols, who went 6 for 10 en route to 16 points. Louvens Saint-Pierre was another key player, putting up 11 points and three steals.

Wekiva smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 19 offensive rebounds. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now pulled down at least eight offensive boards in six consecutive contests.

Despite the defeat, Vanguard saw an underclassman step up: sophomore Turral Berry posted 24 points and five steals. Berry has been hot, having posted two or more steals the last five times he's played. The team also got some help courtesy of Jakhai Ford, who had eight points in addition to six assists and three steals.

Wekiva's win was their third straight at home, which pushed their record up to 8-11. Those victories came thanks to their offensive performance across that stretch, as they averaged 61.0 points per game. As for Vanguard, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 6-10.

Wekiva wasted no time getting back out on the court and has already played their next matchup, a 55-29 victory against International Sports Academy on the 20th. As for Vanguard, they also didn't take long to hit the court again: they've already played their next game, an 82-71 win against New Dimensions on the 21st.
