Preview: Willcox Cowboys vs. Tombstone Yellow Jackets
Willcox is 8-2 against Tombstone since January of 2019, and they'll have a chance to extend that success on Tuesday. The Willcox Cowboys will head out on the road to challenge the Tombstone Yellow Jackets at 7:00 p.m. Having both just faced considerable losses, both teams are looking to turn things around.
Willcox suffered their biggest loss since January 4th on Tuesday. They had to suffer through a rough 68-37 loss at the hands of Morenci. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest defeat Willcox has suffered against Morenci since January 11, 2019.
The loss doesn't tell the whole story though, as several players had good games. One of the most active was JD Whetten, who scored eight points along with two blocks. That's the first time this season that he posted two or more blocks. The team also got some help courtesy of Jovani Rodriguez, who scored six points along with three steals.
Meanwhile, Tombstone's recent rough patch got a bit rougher on Friday after their seventh straight loss. They took a serious blow against Pima, falling 79-25. While losing is never fun, Tombstone can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Arizona basketball rankings (they are ranked 306th, while Pima is ranked 118th).
Willcox's defeat dropped their record down to 8-14. As for Tombstone, they have not been sharp recently, as they've lost eight of their last nine matchups, which put a noticeable dent in their 5-14 record this season.
Willcox beat Tombstone 58-50 when the teams last played back in December of 2023. The rematch might be a little tougher for Willcox since the team won't have the home-court advantage this time around. We'll see if the change in venue makes a difference.
