Basketball Recap: Bishop Amat Comes Up Short

It's hard to turn regular season success into postseason wins, a fact Bishop Amat can now relate to. They came up short against the Irvine Vaqueros on Wednesday, falling 64-42. While losing is never fun, the Lancers can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' California basketball rankings (they are ranked 213th, while the Vaqueros are ranked 96th).

Despite the loss, Bishop Amat saw an underclassman step up: freshman Aiden Shaw went 7-for-16 on his way to 19 points and seven rebounds. The contest was Shaw's eighth in a row with at least 19 points. The team also got some help courtesy of Eli Chavez, who posted 11 points.

Cooper Stearns continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Irvine, dropping a double-double with 31 points and 11 boards. That makes it three consecutive games in which Stearns has scored at least a third of Irvine's points. Another player making a difference was Holden Stearns, who had nine points and five rebounds.

Bishop Amat's defeat dropped their record down to 23-6. As for Irvine, they pushed their record up to 27-2 with the victory, which was their 12th straight at home.

Bishop Amat does not have any more games scheduled as of now. As for Irvine, they will square off against Pasadena at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Pasadena will roll in looking for their fourth straight win, something Irvine surely won't give up without a fight.
