High school football rankings: Huge shakeup in MaxPreps Top 25 after Orange Lutheran upset of St. John Bosco

Orange Lutheran (Orange, Calif.) was the only new team to join the MaxPreps Top 25 high school football rankings after pulling off one of the biggest upsets in state history with a 20-19 win over St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) in the opening round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs. 

The Lancers check in at No. 19 while the Braves dropped 16 spots to No. 20. 

Nico Bland and King Rich Johnson made the two biggest plays for Orange Lutheran in the fourth quarter after trailing 13-7. Bland took a Reagan Toki pass 67 yards for a score to give the Lancers their first lead at 14-13 with 10:44 left. On the ensuing possession, Johnson intercepted a pass from Bosco quarterback Koa Malau'ulu and returned it for a 44 yard pick-six to extend the lead to 20-13. 

Madden Williams caught a 13-yard touchdown pass for St. John Bosco to cut the deficit to 20-19 with 1:51 left but the extra point was missed and the Lancers recovered the onside kick to ice the game. Orange Lutheran will host No. 7 Santa Margarita (Rancho Santa Margarita) in the semifinals Friday. The Eagles jumped up five spots in this week's MaxPreps Top 25 after handing Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) its first loss of the season with a 21-9 win. 

The Trailblazers dropped 10 spots to No. 17. 

On the other side of the bracket, No. 4 Centennial (Corona) and No. 5 Mater Dei (Santa Ana) both won to set up a rematch Friday in Corona. The Huskies beat the Monarchs 43-36 in the regular season. 

In Georgia, the AAAAAA bracket got underway last week and No. 2 Grayson (Loganville), No. 8 Buford and No. 11 Carrollton rolled in the opening round. 

Grayson (11-0) advanced with a 44-7 win over Norcross . With the St. John Bosco and Sierra Canyon losses, the Rams are in the best position to jump to the No. 1 spot if they repeat as AAAAAA state champs. Up next is Colquitt County (Norman Park) on Friday. 

Buford and Carrollton both improved to 11-0 as the Wolves beat Richmond Hill 45-0 and the Trojans cruised to a 58-17 win over North Forsyth (Cumming).
