Homer is 0-10 against Soldotna since May of 2021 but things could change on Monday. The Mariners will take on the Stars at 6:00 p.m. Homer is strutting in with some hitting muscle as they've averaged 6.7 runs per game this season.
Homer fell victim to Kodiak and their airtight pitching crew on Friday. They took a 3-0 hit to the loss column at the hands of the Bears. The home team had taken home the W every time these teams have met since May 1, 2023, but that streak is no more.
Weston Marley spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned (and one unearned) runs on five hits and racked up seven Ks.
At the plate, Homer saw three different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Jayden Simms, who went 2-for-3 with one double. That double marked the first that Simms has hit this season.
Meanwhile, winning is always nice, but doing so behind a season-high score is even better (just ask Soldotna). They put the hurt on Grace Christian with a sharp 16-1 win on Saturday. The high-scoring effort was just what the Stars needed considering they were shut out in their previous match.
Brenden Theel made a splash while hitting and pitching. He looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over four innings while giving up just one earned run off one hit. He has become a key player for Soldotna: the team is 2-1 when he allows at most one hit, but 2-8-2 otherwise. Theel was also big at the plate, going 2-for-3 with three runs, one stolen base, and one double. That's the most runs he has posted since back in May of 2024.
In other batting news, Matthew Schilling was incredible, going 2-for-4 with two stolen bases, two runs, and one double. He is becoming a predictor of Soldotna's success: when he posts at least two runs the team is 3-1 (and 1-8-2 when he doesn't). Another player making a difference was Easton Hawkins, who went 2-for-3 with one stolen base, one run, and one RBI.
Soldotna's record now sits at 4-9-2. As for Homer, their defeat dropped their record down to 6-3.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Monday as neither team is afraid to steal. Homer has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 4.3 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Soldotna struggles in that department as they've been averaging 3 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Homer suffered a grim 19-6 defeat to Soldotna when the teams last played back in May of 2024. Can the Mariners avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
