Softball Recap: Xavier College Prep's Luck Takes a Turn for the Worse on Wednesday

Xavier College Prep dropped their record down to 22-6-4 on Wednesday, which also ended the team's 12-game streak of wins. They took a 6-2 hit to the loss column at the hands of the O'Connor Eagles. Gators fans who chose to attend the game sure picked the wrong one: it was the first time the team's lost against the Eagles since on Wednesday.

Sydney Root was huge while hitting and pitching even without the win. She tossed one inning while giving up no earned runs or hits. She has been nothing but reliable on the mound: she hasn't given up more than two hits in four consecutive appearances. She was also solid in the batter's box, going 2-for-3 with two RBI and one double.

Root wasn't the only one making solid contact as two players wound up with at least one hit. One of them was Sariah McNabb, who went 2-for-4 with one stolen base.

As for O'Connor, they have been performing incredibly well recently as they've won six of their last seven games. That's provided a nice bump to their 23-11 record this season. Those wins came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.1 runs on average over those games.

On O'Connor's side, Maci Jones spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: she surrendered just two earned runs on five hits and racked up nine Ks.

On the hitting side, Avery Gourlay was excellent, going 3-for-4 with two RBI, one run, and one double. Another player making a difference was Sydnee Williams, who went 1-for-4 with one triple, two RBI, and one run.

The teams didn't have to wait long for a rematch: Xavier College Prep beat O'Connor by a score of 2-0 on Thursday.
