Softball Preview: Providence School Stallions vs. Clay Blue Devils

The Providence School Stallions will head out on the road to face off against the Clay Blue Devils at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday. Both come into the match bolstered by wins in their previous matches.

Providence School took a seven-run defeat the last time they faced off against Ponte Vedra, but this time they managed to keep it close and that made all the difference. Providence School sure made it a nail-biter, but they managed to escape with a 6-4 win over Ponte Vedra on Tuesday. The victory made it back-to-back wins for the Stallions.

Elle Burns made a big impact while hitting and pitching. She looked comfortable on the mound, striking out eight batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned (and three unearned) runs off four hits (and only one walk). She has been nothing but reliable: she hasn't tossed less than seven strikeouts in three consecutive appearances. She was also big at the plate, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 3-for-3.

In other batting news, Summer Stearns was excellent, scoring two runs and stealing a base while getting on base in three of her four plate appearances. Lorelai Herndon was another key player, scoring two runs while going 3-for-4.

Providence School was getting hits left and right and finished the game having posted a batting average of .393. The last time their batting average was this high was back in May of 2024.

Meanwhile, after only two runs in their last contest, Clay made sure to put some runs up on the board against Orange Park on Tuesday. Clay was the clear victor by a 12-1 margin over Orange Park. While the Blue Devils didn't have the best season last year (they finished 10-17), it's starting to look like those struggles are a thing of the past.

Sadie Russo tossed a big game, not allowing a single earned run and allowed only two hits while striking out six over five innings pitched.

At the plate, the team relied heavily on Amiah Carrubba, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, two doubles, and one triple. Those two doubles gave her a new career-high. Kaitlyn Howell also deserves some recognition as she hit her first triple of the season.

Clay is on a roll lately: they've won five of their last six games. That's provided a nice bump to their 8-4 record this season. The victories came thanks in part to their pitching effort, having only surrendered 3.8 runs on average over those games. Providence School's record is now 3-5.
