Baseball Recap: Champion Takes a Loss

Champion dropped their record down to 5-8 on Wednesday, which also ended the team's three-game streak of wins at home. They fell just short of the Newton Falls Tigers by a score of 2-1. If the Golden Flashes were looking for revenge after losing 5-2 to the Tigers when the teams met back in April of 2024, then they'll just have to keep looking.

Dylan Howell spent all seven innings on the mound, and it's clear why: he surrendered just two earned runs on nine hits and racked up six Ks. He has been nothing but reliable: he hasn't tossed less than six strikeouts in three consecutive appearances.

At the plate, Champion saw two different players step up and record at least one hit. One of them was Konner Reed, who went 1-for-3 with one stolen base and one RBI. That RBI was Reed's first of the season.

As for Newton Falls, the victory (which was their seventh in a row) raised their record to 10-5. The wins came thanks in part to their hitting performance across that stretch, as they averaged 8.4 runs over those games.

On Newton Falls' side, Cameron Huff was a major factor no matter where he played. He struck out 12 batters over seven innings while giving up just one earned run off two hits. Huff was also big at the plate, going 1-for-4 with one run, one double, and one RBI.

Champion has already played their next matchup, a 7-2 victory against Brookfield on the 8th. As for Newton Falls, they also wasted no time getting back out on the field and have already played their next contest, a 10-2 loss against Harding on the 8th.
